Social Media: a tool for education

In his info-graphic Why Social Media, which I share below, David Geurin gives 7 compelling arguments for using social media in the educational world.

The local elementary school in the town that I work actively uses Twitter and Facebook to update parents on what they school and students are up to. The school will post photos of students' projects, events, fundraisers, and overall news. Students spend a lot of time in school and this allows parents to be involved and be able to picture where their children spend their days learning.

Geurin also mentions that by using social media in the classroom it teaches students digital citizenship. This is so important to inform your students so that they are prepared for entering the digital world and recognize warning signs and dangers. There are dangers to social media as there are in the real world so it is just as important to teach safety skills in technology as it is in everyday life. It has just become an extra lesson that our students must learn.

It also teaches students about different cultures and perspectives. Social media is used worldwide. A classroom may  be able to connect with another classroom across the globe or set up digital pen pals through social media.

Also the ability to use social media has become a valuable career skill. Businesses are on the look out for employees that have social media skills that they can help promote their company and products. By teaching social media skills in the classroom it will make students more hire-able when they graduate. It will also serve as a tool for the rest of their life in whatever career field they choose. They can join groups on Facebook, have Twitter chats, and read Linkedin articles that give them professional insight.
